But following the clash on Monday, conspiracy theorists have set the internet ablaze with rumours that the Democratic nominee may have secretly had help.
Eagle-eyed observers claim to have spotted Clinton, 68, wearing what appears to be an hidden earpiece during the debate.
Footage from the 90-minute discussion at Hofstra University in New York also appears to show the outline of wires and a battery pack under Clinton's jacket.

Eagle-eyed observers claim to have spotted Clinton using an earpiece
Catholic Online website asked: "What is it for? Is it so a team can feed her answers? Is it an anti-seizure device? A hearing aid?"
Social media users were also quick to point out that Republican Trump was not wearing a similar device.
The mystery box under Clinton's jacket sparked fevered speculation
Both candidates were clearly fitted with small microphones on their lapels, in addition to the microphones on their lecterns.
Following criticism of his debate performance, Trump claimed he was given a "very bad" microphone and that debate moderator, Lester Holt of NBC News, asked him "very unfair questions".
He told Fox News: "I don't want to believe in conspiracy theories, of course, but it was much lower than hers and it was crackling."

Trump complained about his microphone
In response, Clinton told reporters on her campaign plane: "Anyone who complains about the microphone is not having a good night."
Fueling earlier conspiracy theories that Clinton is hiding a secret illness, some observers suggested the mystery box was related to her alleged ill-health.
The Political Insider blog suggested the bulge could be a "coughing prevention machine" while another bizarre explanation suggested the device was used to allay symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

The pair clashed for the first time on Monday
But Trump leveled new and highly personal criticism on Tuesday toward Venezuelan-born beauty queen Alicia Machado, who won the 1996 Miss Universe title and is now a US citizen.
He said: "She was the winner and she gained a massive amount of weight.
"And it was a real problem. We had a real problem. Not only that - her attitude - and we had a real problem with her."
Clinton, the first woman to win the presidential nomination of a major US political party, seemed to pique Trump when she brought up during the debate how Trump had insulted women, mentioning Machado by name.
Clinton said Trump called her "Miss Piggy" and also "Miss Housekeeping" because she was a Latina.
As the Daily Record reports, sleeping on your left side is the least harmful position for your spine.

THIS is the best position for you
If you lie on your back, there is a danger you'll end up putting too much pressure on your hips and upper back.
If you prefer to sleep on your front, then this can lead to neck and lower back strain.
Whereas sleeping on your left-hand side can do you the world of good. The body is able to take the pressure off lymph drainage from the heart and spleen, which is crucial for encouraging the natural flow of lymph fluid and preventing lymphatic congestion.
As positions go, it's also better for your breathing - especially if you find yourself congested of a nighttime.
Partner who snores?
By encouraging them to lie on their left, the volume and frequency of their snoring will be reduced.
Your heart will thank you
That's because lying on your side gives optimum air flow to your lungs and prevents the base of your tongue from lolling into the back of your throat, obstructing breathing.
If you suffer from heartburn, sleeping on your left can reduce the uncomfortable symptoms AND reduce acid reflux.
Pregnant?
Women expecting a baby are advised to adopt this position when falling asleep to encourage healthy blood flow.

Pregnant women and snorers can benefit
And on a more toilet-related topic , adopting the left-hand side will allow your body to process waste quicker, which in turn helps guard you against constipation.
Because of the route the intestines take, lying on the left means food is able to travel easier towards your colon.
Self-service checkouts saying “Unexpected item in the bagging area”
Aidan Martin Devlin was probably not planning on making 'health' smoothies during his naughty trip to Tesco .
The 53-year-old last Friday pleaded guilty to charges of false representation after being caught pretending apples were carrots while using the supermarket's self-scanner.
The vegetable is considerably cheaper than the crunchy English fruit, which costs approximately £2 per kilo. Carrots are 60p for the same weight.
Devlin admitted 12 charges at Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Friday and will be sentenced in four weeks' times.

District Judge White told Devlin to co-operate with the Probation Board: “If you do as you are asked and provide them with the information they require, then it is likely the court will follow their recommendation.”
As you're likely aware, Devlin's not the only one to try to cheat supermarkets out of the odd few quid.
Or more, as is the case with 34-year-old Claire Dunleavy. The 34-year-old, from Stoke-on-Trent, scammed Asda out of around £50 by scanning in reduced 7p loaves of bread but putting other products in her shopping bags.
While Dunleavy's case is a little more reckless, it's fair to say that plenty of people have been cheating the nation's supermarkets for years – often out of the odd £1.

People even talk openly about doing so...
@davcams mate will have to show you how you cheat on self checkout dear potatoes scan cheap ones they even know people do it
According to researchers, customers are far more inclined to sneak away with the odd butternut squash masquerading as a jacket potato because self-scan machines are so irritating.
The checkouts provoke aggressive behaviour...
The stupid self scan machine at the supermarket was having a serious Monday morning issue today
According to Dr Matt Hopkins, giving people the opportunity to self-scan means that they can blame technological faults on their bar code-based shenanigans.
Co-author of the study, Dr Matt Hopkins, told The Telegraph : “All innovations in retailing are a business choice – hopefully done to make the shopper happier and the business more profitable.
“But those same choices can also produce negative outcomes as well, such as increased opportunities for losses to occur."

George Charles, spokesman for VoucherCodes Pro told Mirror Online : "I'm sure most of those who now admit to stealing via self-service checkouts didn't initially set out to do so – they may have forgotten to scan something and quickly realised how easy it could be to take items without scanning them."
Not everyone thinks the common trend is okay, of course.
The person that cheats on their taxes, speeds, doesn't scan all their groceries at the self check out will likely cheat in other areas.
Oz had previously been a pup himself and was looking to become a master after retiring.
He said: “I found that it did something for me unlike anything I had ever experienced before. All the decisions you have to make, and the things you have to worry about as a human go away.
“It’s like being on a holiday.”
Lucky, who was inspired to become a pup by the costumes in Batman, said: “I said on the site that I wanted to come and try it out then this year around three years later I just bit the bullet and said I would like to go to Birmingham Pride dressed as a pup.”
That was the moment that changed Lucky’s life.
At the time he was living with his parents in Coventry but he has now moved in with Oz. Both men are gay but they are not a couple.

Oz added: “We are not sexually together, some pups do it for sexual reasons but that’s not the case for us.”
Oz is a retired maths teacher and the last school he worked in was in Tamworth. Lucky has two jobs and tries to keep his work life separate from his life as a pup.
They often go for walks at night in Nuneaton dressed up but not during the day.
“At the moment I guess you could kind of say we hide away”, said Oz.
“If we go to London we can go from our hotel to an event dressed up and that’s fine but in Nuneaton it’s just a bit different.
“Things are gradually changing, we would like to be able to be like this all the time if we wanted to but I don’t think we’re quite there yet.”

Lucky: “I have a human bed and a cage and I sleep in both. It’s a cage for a great dane and it’s comfortable.”
Why do you enjoy living like this?
Lucky: “It means the stress of the day goes away. I don’t have to worry about anything, I don’t have to worry about bills or work.”
Oz: “In some ways Lucky is a substitute for a real pup, he will never grow old and is always going to be a playful, young, flirty, friendly pup.”
What do your families think?
Lucky: “I haven’t told my dad, I have told my mum and she said ‘whatever makes you happy, it’s not my kind of thing’ which is fine.”

Lucky lives with Oz, and acts just as a dog would - playing fetch, enjoying a belly rub, going for walks, and sometimes sleeping in a cage
Oz: “My parents know I am gay, they know that we are living together but they don’t know why or how, I just don’t think they would understand.”
Do you do everything like a dog would?
Lucky: “I don’t eat dog food, I don’t normally eat out of a bowl, I go to the toilet like a human. I just find when you are a human pup you have to have certain limits.”
How much does the pup outfit cost?
Oz: “Lucky’s outfit costs about £1,000 in total.”
Where did the name Lucky come from?
Lucky: “I had a pup called Lucky when I was eight or nine, she was a really good dog and I loved her to bits, she was my first pet. It felt like she was more of my friend than my dog.
“I took her for a walk one day and unfortunately she had a heart attack and died . Having her name is kind of a memorial sort of thing for her.”

Thwaites has written a book about his experiences, called ‘GoatMan; How I Took a Holiday from Being Human’.
If you break-up with your fiance less than a month before your wedding, you probably wouldn't fancy doing your engagement shoot, right?
Brooke Lowry split from her would-be hubby just three weeks before they planned to tie the knot.
But rather than scrap her Disney -themed engagement photo call, Brooke decided to go ahead with it anyway.
Without her Prince Charming, the former Disney Television Animation employee did her ' Happily Ever After ' shoot at Disneyland, complete with fairytale scenes and princess dress.

"It was a bittersweet day," Brooke told HuffPost .
"What was supposed to be engagement photos turned out to be a solo session because of unforeseen circumstances.
"I decided to show up anyways hoping to one day look back on the pictures knowing they marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new adventure."
Brooke's photographer , Drexelle Park , had been booked well in advance. Brooke said everyone was really kind, with makeup artist Tatiana even dolling her up for free.

She even got a private tour of the park.
Brooke said the day was "cathartic," helping ease the turmoil of her untimely break-up.
Brooke added: "I felt uneasy, but I also felt empowered. I am brave even when I am scared.

"It was definitely a milestone, just not the one I thought it was going to be."
Brooke's not sure what she'll be doing next. But she's happy with her photos, and is hopeful of the future.

She added: “I am not quite sure what the next chapter holds...
"All I can do is have courage, be kind, let go of the past, work hard, dream big, and keep believing.”
If you can't stand snakes then look away now - this is the stunning video captured by dam construction workers in Brazil of a gigantic 10m anaconda that found its way into their building site.
The huge serpent, capable of eating a man, has been tied down to a crane and a chain is wrapped around it.
Weighing an estimated 400kg, the snake's length is truly awesome and can be seen in full as the camera operator tracks from head to tail.
It was said to have been found by workers building the Belo Monte dam in Altamira, Brazil, and was flushed out by an explosion.

But the images provoked a storm of criticism on YouTube from commenters who said the snake should not have been killed.

Workers were forced to chain the snake to protect themselves
One commenter said: "Shame on these people for killing it! A snake that big has probably been alive for a very long time now, just to be killed for a few pictures? What a waste."
Another added: "Why would you kill such a beautiful snake?"

The snake's huge size and bulk is clear from the video
A third commenter, a self-professed snake lover, weighed in and said: "I adore the cuties. I have two of my own. But they were doing construction, and it was in the way.
"Do you know how hard it is to move a 30 foot snake? Especially a wild anaconda.
"Anacondas are extremely aggressive snakes. Even in captivity, they're extremely hard to tame down and can be very bitey. A wild one, I wouldn't want to mess with at all."

Green anacondas generally grow up to about 5m and, though not the longest snake species, are so bulky they outweigh more elongated cousins like the reticulated python.
