Mince pies are already in supermarkets and people are getting emotional about it

Supermarkets are stocking mince pies in September

Summer has only just ended.

And yet, in early September, Britain's supermarkets are piling mince pies and Christmas cakes on shelves.

It's around four months until Santa arrives, so you might think the likes of Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Asda are being a little hasty.

Great British Bake Off has only just got going, autumn leaves still cling to trees, and the Premier League season is only really in its opening embraces.

In fact, many of the products out now will be out-of-date-by the true festive season.

One shopper in Kent, Julie Delange, 37, said: "I couldn’t believe it – I saw Christmas mince pies on sale in Asda but the date on the box was two months before Christmas".

Should we really be gorging on mince pies in autumn?

Still, we all know about supermarkets' unrelenting quest for cash. And people are taking note.
