Capable of defusing unexploded bombs and mines in war zones, the lightly-armoured all-terrain robot has been dubbed 'The Specialist'.

The brainchild of Russia 's Defense Ministry’s Central Scientific-Research Test Center of Robotics, it will be expected to perform repairs in active battlefields.

A representative for the Defense Ministry told Izvestia: “It has successfully passed a series of field tests at an ordnance range in southern Russia, and is already being used there in life-threatening situations.”

The humanoid tank boasts human-like palms and fingers while the technology's 'head' features two cameras capable of rotating 360 degrees to be used by the robot's operator.

The robot has tracks, stands two metres tall and five metres long, and is capable of travelling for 20 kilometres over even rough terrain.

Izvestia was told by military expert Oleg Zheltonozhko: “Demining robots have been used by foreign armies for quite some time now, suffice it to mention the British Dragon Runner of the American PackBot, but none of them deserves to be called a sapper.

“Because the manipulators to be found on most of the existing demining robots are fairly primitive, all they can do is get hold of the bomb and move it as far away from people as possible."
